What food attracts Wild Birds?
It can be as simple as they have not found it yet because it can take days or weeks for them to discover this new food source. Also what kind of bird feeder styles and food? You can provide the three main types of food. 1) Black oil sunflower seed is the best for the widest range of birds like Chickadees and Cardinals. 2) Nyjer or thistle is for Goldfinches. 3) Suet for many Woodpeckers, Nuthatches, and Wrens. And if want, white millet for sparrows and doves.
Where To Place Bird Feeders?
Bird Feeder placement is also key. Birds must feel safe. A spot near trees or shrubs but not closer than 8-10 feet, to provide shelter and cover from predators, out of weather & sun. A place that can give protection from squirrels, cats and hawks. And a Quiet area away from heavy human or pet activity. And keep feeders clean from dirt and mold. Especially Hummingbird feeders need to have their nectar changed out regularly.
Why are Birds not Visiting?
Birds have routines and seasonal activities. They behave according to their natural cycle. If natural food is plentiful, feeders get less traffic until supply dips again. Some birds prefer insects, seed heads, berries and nuts. Don’t worry about dependency, feeding the birds is supplemental to these. Bird populations shift throughout the year. You might be between migration waves or winter residency changes. If neighbors feed birds with more appealing setups like 3 or 4 multiple feeders, fresh seed, or more cover, yours might be lower on their list.
What Makes a Bird Sanctuary?
In addition to baffled Poles with bird feeders, complete the bird sanctuary with a garden that has water baths, berry shrubs and trumpet like flowers. Built it and they will come! Enjoy!
