Galileo Thermometer inspired by the Italian astronomer and physicist, Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) discovery that the density of liquid expands or contracts with temperature changes led to the creation of the world's oldest thermometer. The tall 17" thermometer is made up of a glass cylinder and inside the cylinder are 10 hand blown, calibrated, glass spheres each with imprinted designated temperature reading weighted medallions.
As indoor temperatures fall, spheres will rise, as temperatures rise, spheres will sink. The lowest floating sphere in the upper group will indicate actual room temperature. A functional work of art! Temperature gradients of 4 degrees from 60 to 96 degrees Fahrenheit and is accurate to within 2.5 degrees. The bubbles are calibrated by adding a certain amount of colored fluid to them so that they have the exact same density and weighted tags are attached to the bubbles that differs very slightly in density (the ratio of mass to volume) from the other bubbles. As the temperature of the water changes, it either expands or contracts, thereby changing its density and effects the bubbles. This indoor thermometer is absolutely beautiful to display with light reflecting off of the glass and bubbles. As a bonus, it can also teach us something about the world we live in.
